A New Tanya class By Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz “By giving Charity we create G-Ds Name” Tanya Igeret Hakodesh Chapter 5 The prophet Samuel says ויעש דוד שם King David made Hashem’s name. The Zohar says King David made Hashem’s name by giving charity. The Alter Rebbe will explain how so. The Talmud explains based on the verse כי בי-ה ה׳ צור עולמים that this world was created with the letter ה & the world to come was created with the letter י’ The Zohar says that the world to come is called Bina since Bina is comprehension & in the world to come we comprehend infinite light of Hashem that it’s source is high level of Chochma hence the reason that the world to come is created from the Yud which resembles Chochma as the Zohar says נקדה בהיכלה the dot of Chochma in the chamber of Binah. The Alter Rebbe quotes the Zohar that says אבא יסד ברתא that Chochma is the source as well for Malchut & Dibur. The Alter Rebbe explains the connection with speech & Chochma that speech is not a function of physical movement or intellect rather its source is in רצון הנפש a very high level of Chochma. Based on this Zohar than even this world is seemingly created from the יוד the high level of Chochma. The Alter Rebbe explains that the פנימוית & צורה of the letters are from קדמות השכל & רצון הנפש however the חיצוניות & חומר of the letters are from are from the breath of the heart which starts with the letter ה׳ hence the reason that this world was created with the ה׳ The start of the process is in the first ה of Hashem name the actual creation comes from the second ה Only this physical world comes from the ה as all the higher worlds are able to receive a greater revelation. In Atzilut is the Yud Chochma total humility, in Beriah is the first Heh Binah a world of understanding, In Yetzirah is the Vov emotions love & Awe, in this world the second Heh the world of action with the gift of total acceptance. The external part of this world is from the External speech that’s why this world is a materialistic coarse world. Now the Alter Rebbe explains how we create Hashems name. For example a very wise person to teach a very simple idea is a huge צמצום same with the infinite Hashem to be מצמצם himself to one letter the ה to create this world is a major צמצום as the verse says בהבראם with a ה the world was created. Hashed did so out of pure Chesed as the same letters of the word of בהבראם is like באברהם that personified Chesed. Now that the world was created Chesed from Hashem comes once we start doing Chesed here that’s the reason why it’s not enough just to learn torah we need to do Chesed as Jeremiah says we should not brag with wisdom we should only brag with Chesed as Chesed draws done the light all the way in to the world. As the Ari Zal explains that when you learn torah you draw down energy to the world of Beriah, when you learn mishna & Halacha to Yetzirah, when you do Tzedaka & Gemilut Chesed you draw down the light to this world. When we do Chesed we evoke Hashem to do Chesed & constrict himself so that the powerful light can come to this world. Thru our Chesed we cause Hashem to send the light of the י into the ה causing the name of Hashem to be complete. For example when we are by ourselves we use our intellect & think however if we want to communicate with others we need to constrict ourselves to speech.
